Walking in Eastern SicilyVolcanos, Greek theaters, stark mountains, gentle seas, fresh-caught fish, heady rich wines – Sicily has it all. Encompassing the most variety of any of Italy's regions, Sicily also evidences the most contradictions. There's something not quite European in the air – perhaps born upon the sirocco that often blows across the land. Or maybe it's the hint of Saracen pirate in the waiter at the cafe, the fisherman on the dock, the maid at the hotel. Whatever it is, you can't fail to be allured by the charm of Italy's most enchanting island. Highlights

Day Walking Tour
Luci sul Barocco - guided walking tour of Catania Come and see Catania, a site in the WHL of UNESCO since 2002, discovering one of more beautiful examples of Baroque style town. Subjected to Etna's fickle temperament, Catania has been damaged by lava flows and earthquakes on several occasions. Despite being overshadowed by the Mount Etna and other popular tourist attractions such as Siracusa and Taormina, Catania boasts a wealth of fine Baroque architecture and is proudly promoting itself as a tourist destination. Most of Catania's wide streets and majestic palaces were built during the eighteenth century, after a devastating Etna's eruption in 1669 and, a few decades later (1693), a terrible earthquake that struck the whole of Eastern Sicily and destroyed the city. Catania managed to react to these natural calamities and started a sumptuous reconstruction that foresaw wide use of black lava stone with the white calcareous stone from Siracusa. The principal architects involved in the reconstruction transported the city from its medieval roots creating wide avenues, elegant buildings, squares with splendid churches and monasteries which produce a magnificent black and white effect.
